Electronic Distance Measurement - Help Wanted

Hello,

A group of high school students is working on a project which involves using
ultrasonic sensors to measure small distances (around 6 to 60 inches).

There are a large number of possible transducers / sensors.

Anybody have any experience and can suggest a source of circuit ideas for
them to experiment with?
